Why are translations always so much shorter?

When watching foreign shows or movies, you hear characters say several paragraphs worth of words… and then the subtitle somehow summarizes all of it into 2 or 3 words. How the hell do they manage to do that every time?? Do they use a super computer to somehow calculate super distilled meanings? I bet they can tell you what the meaning of life is too, all within 3 words.
